Institute of National Importance

The government of India gives the status of ‘Institute of National Importance’ (INI) to top institutes in India through the act of Parliament. According to the Ministry of Education, an institute with the status of INI plays a crucial role in teaching and developing highly skilled students in the state/country. Only a few chosen colleges/universities make it to the coveted list. Such institutes are funded, recognized and supervised by the government to develop learning centres in academics and research. All the IITs, NITs, AIIMS, NIPERs, ISI and some other specialized colleges/universities have been given the status of Institutes of National Importance. There is a handful of benefits conferred to the INIs, and major of them include:

  • They hold the autonomy to upgrade their quality, efficiency and accountability
  • Receive more funds from the government to carry out enhancement
  • Have/provide a better quality of education imparted to the students
  • Have/provide better learning and research facilities for the students
  • They are allowed to offer more scholarships to students studying in their institute.
