About Us
National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) was originally established in September 1961 as “Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC)”, jointly by the Government of India and the Government of Kerala. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India elevated CREC to a Deemed University under the name National Institute of Technology Calicut in June 2002. NIT Calicut is an academically autonomous Institute of National Importance fully funded by the Government of India and is administered by the NIT Act, MHRD, Govt. of India. Since its inception with 3 undergraduate programmes in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering having a total student strength of 125, the institute has been broadening the spectrum of services to the humanity; Institute now offers Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degree programmes in Engineering, Science, Technology and Management. Today, the Institute offers 11 undergraduate, 30 postgraduate and doctoral research programmes, with a total student strength of over 6500. It is ranked 23rd under the Engineering stream and 3rd under the Architecture Stream in the NIRF ranking 2020. In a recognition to the vibrant culture of research and innovation in the Institute, our Institute secured 8th rank (the only NIT among the Top 10) in the ARIIA ranking 2020 by MHRD. The Institute Innovation Council (IIC) of NIT Calicut was given a 5 - Star Rating in the evaluation done by the MHRD's Innovation Council and AICTE for the activities during 2019 – 2020.
