About Us
Birsa Agricultural University is an State Agricultural University (SAU) in National Agricultural Research System (NARS) of ICAR, set up with the primary objective to develop area specific technologies and create trained manpower in the field of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Forestry, Dairy, Fishery etc. for the undulating topography and resource-poor farmers the state. It was established on June 26, 1981 with formal inauguration by the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Bestowed with a sprawling campus spread over 3551 acres of land, it has eleven prestigious colleges offering quality education in various streams. Ranchi-based Agriculture College, established in 1955, College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, set up in 1961, Asia’s first Forestry College, established in 1979 and was brought under BAU. The University is offering regular Bachelors’, Master’s and Ph.D. programmes.
The centre for Biotechnology, set up in 1999 was upgraded as College of Biotechnology in 2005. These are its earlier established colleges. Seven new colleges, viz Rabindra Nath Tagore Agriculture College, Deoghar; Tilka Manjhi Agriculture College, Godda; Agriculture College, Garhwa; Phulo Jhano Dairy Technology College, Hansdiha, Dumka; College of Fisheries Science, Gumla, College of Horticulture, Khuntpani, West Singhbhum and College of Agricultural Engineering, Ranchi came into existence 6-7 years ago. Centre for Agribusiness Management offering PG course in ABM is also working for nearly 15 years. The regular Bachelors’, Master’s and Ph.D. programmes are running in the three colleges namely the Ranchi Agricultural College, College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry and College of Forestry since long. With the launching of UGC approved 3-year B.Voc. programme in Herbal Resource Technology and Human Nutrition & Dietetics a few years ago, we are striving to improve the scope and ambit of Birsa Agricultural University for the benefit of the masses the of state.
Area of Excellence
Birsa Agricultural University is known for a sound foundation of basic agricultural sciences in class rooms, laboratories and fields with objectives to expose students for developing, planning, management and economics of raising crops under the practical crop production course and different farming enterprises and to develop professional skills in farming community and the allied professionals in a better way through their training under Rural Works Experience Programme, Experiential Learning Programme, Plant Clinics and Veterinary Clinics. The University possesing centre of excellance for Integrated farming system and state of art facilitities in Veterinary science.
Research Capability and Focus Area
Research in the field of agriculture and allied sectors is one of the most important mandates of the University. Directorate of Research has been working on need-based, location specific, low-cost, system responsive basic and strategic research as per the requirement of the farmers for bringing about marked improvement in self-sufficiency and livelihood security. Increased application of frontier technologies like biotechnology and genetic engineering, nano technology, information technology, GIS, artificial intelligence etc. in agriculture is also essential for accelerating the pace of research while maintaining the sustainability of natural resources, biodiversity and overall environment. Management of vast rice fallow area, crop diversification, rainwater harvesting, management and recycling of crop wastes, fodder development, post-harvest management, processing and value addition and ensuring availability of quality seeds in time our prime thrust areas in research.
Academic Facilities
Semester system of education is followed in the University. Each semester consists of approximately115 working days. The residential requirements for the award of B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture and B.Sc. Forestry is eight semesters including RWE & ELP.
