About Us

The Central Sanskrit University (CSU) has the unique distinction of being the largest and the only multi-campus language university in the world. CSU also has the privilege of acting as the nodal agency for the implementation of Sanskrit related policies & schemes of the Government of India. In that capacity, the university works in close coordination with the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Fully conscious of this responsibility in this regard, the Govt. of India, in pursuance of the recommendations of the Sanskrit Commission (1956-57) constituted a Central Sanskrit Board, which recommended the establishment of a Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan. Accordingly, the Sansthan was established in 15th October, 1970 as an autonomous organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Act XXI of 1860) for the development and promotion of Sanskrit all over the country and abroad. It was fully funded by Government of India and functioned as an apex body for propagation and development of Sanskrit. It also assumed the role of a nodal body for the effective implementation of various recommendations made by the Sanskrit Commission set up by the Government of India, Ministry of Education in 1956 to consider the propagation and development of Sanskrit language and education in all its aspects. The Sansthan was fully financed by the Government of India and works as a vital agency of the Central Government under the aegis of Ministry of Education. CSU is a member of the All-India Association of Universities. CSU has been accredited 'A++' category by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). CSU is also recognised as ‘Category-1 University’ by UGC of India. The CSU provides wide range of academic programmes for teaching-learning of Sanskrit and other allied disciplines in its 13 Campuses, 4 Research Institutes, 22 Adarsha Colleges, and 100+ Affiliated Institutes.

Area of Excellence

The CSU's area of excellence is to disseminate the knowledge of Sanskrit Shastra Paramparas (traditions) to the next level of teaching-learning. The CSU is dedicated to facilitate the learning experience by sharing and innovative methods through Simple and Standard Sanskrit Medium. The CSU is willing to enhance the quality teaching, research and publications with collaboration of HEIs committed to promotion of the most ancient and modern language Sanskrit.

Research Capability and Focus Area

The CSU has identified own priorities and thrust areas of research. The priorities and thrust areas of research need to be addressed systematically as Research Projects, Publications, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), and Manuscripts Repository. Particularly these are following are the priorities and thrust areas, as Manuscripts Editing and Preparation of Critical Editions, Indian Knowledge Traditions and their Application, Review of Criticism of Indian Knowledge Traditions, and Historical, Descriptive and Experimental Research.
