About Us
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has been an institution of excellence in Agricultural education and training since its establishment in 1905. Instituted to train senior officers for provincial Departments of Agriculture, it later expanded to offer two-year Associateship of IARI introduced in 1923. By 1957, 903 associateships had been awarded which was recognized as equivalent to a Master’s degree by the Ministry of Education in 1949. In 1958, University Grants Commission granted IARI Deemed to be University status, enabling it to commence postgraduate teaching leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Under the leadership of Dr. R.W. Cummings, the Post Graduate School of IARI was established, offering programs in disciplines like Agronomy, Entomology, Genetics, Horticulture, Mycology & Plant Pathology, and Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry. Today, IARI offers teaching programs leading to M.Sc./M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees in 26 disciplines. IARI has been instrumental in revolutionizing Indian and international agriculture by producing highly trained manpower for agricultural research, teaching, and extension services. Its alumni have significantly contributed to increasing agricultural production from 55 million tonnes in 1949-50 to 259 million tonnes presently. With an alumni strength of more than 12000, IARI continues to be a global leader in agricultural education and research.
