About Us
The K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies brings together three institutions that have an established presence in the field of religion, culture and philosophy: the Bharatiya Sanskriti Peetham, the Centre for Buddhist Studies and the Centre for Studies in Jainism. Together, we bring an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of Indian religious and philosophical traditions, through programmes that range from academically rigorous Doctoral and Master’s degrees, to certificate courses that engage with the interests of the larger community.
Area of Excellence
We equip students with methodological tools to understand how religious beliefs influence ethics, art and literature, and define identities, in the historical as well as the present context. Students investigate how social, political and economic forces have shaped religion and continue to do so.
Research Capability and Focus Area
Institute has a unique combination of courses covering specializations in Sanskrit Literature, Buddhist Literature and Jain Literature, Philosophy, Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Yoga and Allied Science, Ancient Indian languages (Prakrit, Pali, Sanskrit) and foreign languages (Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish).
