About Us
The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS), a 63-year-old consortium of 92 leading American colleges and universities established to promote Indian studies in the U.S. The major programs of the Institute are located in India where the AIIS (1) supports its research fellowship program; (2) operates its Intensive Language Program; (3) facilitates U.S. study abroad programs in India; and (4) maintains two archives and research centers namely, (i) Center for Art & Archaeology and (ii) Archives and Research Center for Ethnomusicology) at its national campus at Gurugram utilized by scholars worldwide. Two regional offices and language program centers in India provide services for American scholars. For more than AIIS has been teaching 16-languages in the country wherever these languages are widely spoken.
Area of Excellence
AIIS offers intensive, immersion-based training in modern and classical South Asian Languages at multiple sites in India, help students to undertake internship with its research centers in Gurgaon especially in the areas of art, archaeology, music and ethnomusicology.
Research Capability and Focus Area
AIIS fellows represent all fields in the humanities, social sciences and some sciences. The AIIS offers senior fellowships for those holding the Ph.D. degree; junior fellowships for those conducting their dissertation research in India, professional development fellowships; and performing and creative arts fellowships. In addition to the fellowship and language programs and the research centers, AIIS provides services to American scholars in India, such as securing institutional affiliations, arranging access to archives, and provides services to U.S. study abroad and group projects abroad programs in India
Academic Facilities
Students can earn 12-16 credits per semester and 8 credits.
