About Us
IISER Kolkata (IISER-K), located near Kolkata was established in 2006, is under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. IISER-K is presently identified as one of the premier institutions of research and teaching in the country. It has now grown to 126 faculty members, distributed in seven academic departments, being supported by a dedicated team of 90 administrative staff members. Presently the total student strength is 1539. These are distributed between 952 BS-MS, 137 Integrated-PhD (IPhD), 3 MS by Research in Space Physics, and 443 doctoral students. This number also includes 5 International students from SAARC and African countries. The Institute has established excellence in science in the form of teaching, publications, both in terms of quality and quantity.

Research Capability and Focus Area
Research at IISER Kolkata focuses on seven major disciplines: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Computational & Data Sciences, Earth Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physical sciences.
It has four centres of excellence. Research is also offered in the interdisciplinary areas connecting two or more of disciplines.
Academic Facilities
IISER-K has state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories with high-end modern instruments and has initiated an Incubation Centre for conversion of research ideas into industrial applications.
