IITGN is an autonomous Institute of national importance managed by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD). IITGN is an Institute of national importance created under the purview of the IIT Act of 1961 and subsequent amendments. The Institute has received very high rankings in 2016 and 2017 of 8 and 30, respectively. The Institute has been peer reviewed as part of the peer-review process of IITs. IITGN currently offers courses in 16 disciplines spanning engineering, sciences and humanities and social sciences including interdisciplinary courses. The Institute has a vibrant educational and research ecosystem, including seven centres of excellence which encourage interdisciplinary scholarly pursuits at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. IITGN has developed innovative governance and recruitment processes and robust models for self-governance and administration. The recruitment and evaluation of faculty, admission of students, development of its curriculum and research agenda, global collaborations, physical and research infrastructure, etc., have all been driven by the pursuit of excellence. Globalization is one of the core pillars of IITGN’s education. IITGN has a diverse faculty who have received their education and/or research training at the most prestigious institutions across the world. IITGN’s faculty have won numerous national and international honours and awards and are recognized as a body of exceptionally high caliber based on their professional endeavours. Faculty of the institution serve on or lead numerous professional committees including journal editorial boards, grant funding panels and national societies. IITGN has pro-actively initiated engagement with foreign universities and agencies so as to attract foreign students and researchers. IITGN has systematically invested in developing cutting-edge research facilities that cut across traditional discipline boundaries. IITGN has created robust financial systems of operation that have kept pace with the sharp trajectory of growth of the institute. Faculty research collaborations span countries across all continents of the world. Several eminent faculty and industry leaders from across the world have served on IITGN’s advisory panels and committees. The Institute has developed a number of strategic partnerships with leading universities, industries and R&D organizations abroad for student and faculty exchanges and research collaborations. Employing emerging technologies to address societal challenges is embedded in IITGN’s academic curriculum. Traditional BTech and MTech education has been transformed at IITGN to be societal problem-centric. The Institute is undertaking significant infrastructure expansion over the next decade and the research facilities will keep pace with that growth. The Institute has built world class facilities and amenities for students, including hostels, dining halls, cafeterias, indoor and outdoor sports, library, meeting rooms and recreational spaces. IITGN considers social responsibility as a core ethos and guiding principle of the Institute. Social engagement is built into the IITGN research culture and is reflected in the various centres of excellence revolving around societal concerns. IITGN was a pioneer in the country in ensuring the safety and well-being of construction workers engaged in constructing its campus. IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN), since its inception in 2008, has been reimagining IIT ecosystem to drive innovations in higher education. IITGN’s campus on the banks of Sabarmati is spread over 400 acres. The fully residential campus has won laurels for its eco-friendly design and practices such as passive cooling, earthquake resistant confined masonry construction and waste disposal mechanisms.
